“Dancehall Dreams with Blacka Di Danca” – Mini Documentary

Dance instructor, choreographer, cultural ambassador, viral video star… Blacka Di Danca is at the forefront of dancers taking dancehall culture worldwide. In this episode of LargeUp TV shot by Tony Lowe, experience a day in the life of Blacka Di Danca, as he reminisces over his beginnings in Brooklyn, hits the club with his Danca Family, tours his old neighborhood in Crown Heights, and invites us into one of his massively popular dancehall classes in Times Square.

Keeping up with Blacka is no easy task. He’s in a new country practically every day, sharing his love of dancehall with students from Siberia to Colombia — when he’s not on stage or shooting videos with the likes of Rihanna, Alkaline and Major Lazer, that is. In this window into his life, you’ll see what it took for Blacka to get to where he is today, and how he’s keeping his movement going full throttle.

Interview: “Follow Your Dreams” with Blacka Di Danca

5 years ago, I made the decision to quit my full-time job to follow my dreams. I was not in the financial position to make that decision, and to be honest, I wasn’t sure where I wanted to go… I just knew I couldn’t stay where I was. I quit a full-time job with full union 32BJ benefits for my entire family to go on a one-month dance tour paying monthly what I made every week at work. Quitting wasn’t easy at all, and almost every single person in my life told me it was a dumb decision to quit a job to dance for a living… almost everyone advised me to stay at work and dance on my days off… but I knew that wasn’t good enough for me…. I almost cried trying to figure out what the right decision would be… to make consistent money that I could retire from, or to go against my loved ones advice and go broke for a living…. Inside, I knew that I would rather look back 50 years from now saying that “I tried something crazy when I was young and it didn’t work”, than “I wanted to follow my dreams when I was younger, but now I’ll never know if it would have worked out or not.” So… I quit, with not a dollar saved.

This is just a brief peek into the story on how I went from full-time employment, to unemployment, to completely broke, to becoming one of the world’s top dance instructors… all within 5 years. I hope my story can inspire somebody today to do what they love, just once in their life.
